Congratulations go out to KIA member, John Mullen & Company, who was named the 2017 SBA Family-Owned Business of the Year for the State of Hawaii. Founded in California by John and Margaret Mullen in 1956, John Mullen & Company moved to Hawaii three years later, making a name for itself as the largest independent multiline insurance adjusting firm in the islands. John and Margaret’s son, Terry Mullen, is the company’s president and CEO and continues the fine tradition of excellent products and customer service.

Stanford Carr, president of Stanford Carr Development, LLC was named Developer of the Year by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Smart Growth America, who said it works to create healthy communities with strong local businesses, school and shops nearby, transportation options and jobs that pay well.” He was nominated by the city’s Department of Planning and Permitting for his work on two affordable-housing projects in Kakaako: Halekauwila Place and Keauhou Place. Congratulations, Stanford.

The Howard Hughes Corporation reminds KIA members that the Kakaako Farmers Market is every Saturday from 8am to 12pm at the Ward Warehouse parking lot. Also at the Ward Village Courtyard (1240 Ala Moana Blvd) on Wednesday, May 31st from 6pm to 8pm there will be a presentation of "Hokulea Homecoming - A Talk Story with the Crewof the Malama Honua."

HCDA News


In the March 24th issue of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser their "Name in the News" featured the HCDA Executive Director, Jesse Souki. The Q&A article covered a lot of information about HCDA and the Kakaako area. Some of the article pointed to the progress of the homeless moving into shelters and using government services. Regarding the Kakaako Waterfront Park, he said that "planning is a long but rewarding process if done right," as it relates to the master plan once it is adopted.


HCDA announced that there will be a community meeting on a possible community garden in the Kakaako Waterfront Park on Wednesday, May 24th from 5:30am to 7:30pm at the HCDA Office (547 Queen Street). There is no parking available at the HCDA office.  There are pay parking lots and street parking available.
