The Honolulu Design Center hired a marketing and PR person as of April 1st. Not an April Fool’s joke, but they brought back Joett Colgan to promote INspiration furniture to developers and the design community, as well as promoting the Cupola events room and Stage Restaurant. How fortunate for the Honolulu Design Center, as Joett was an important part of the initial team as their Marketing Manager when they opened in 2001 (Joett, please change). She will be coordinating the August 6th KIA General Membership Meeting with Sherry Goya, KIA Executive Director. Feel free to contact Joett at 782-8920 or jcolgan@hdc-hawaii.com.

HART News

In the EIS, the rail alignment between Ward and Kamakee was on Howard Hughes property. It did not go on to Queen Street until it crossed the Queen and Kamakee intersection. Recently, HART  revealed that they will move the alignment Mauka so that the alignment goes on to Queen Street sooner. By the rear Queen Street gate of the Howard Hughes property, behind Office Depot, there will be a straddle column going over Queen as the alignment goes on to Queen. In the left lane in the Diamond Head direction, there will be two single columns. To make up for the loss of a lane, HART will widen Queen on the Makai side. On the other side of the intersection, there will be a straddle column spanning the current five lanes. All utilities on Queen Street Diamond Head of the Cummins Street intersection will be placed underground.

The rail project will also have a major impact in the Kona/Pensacola area. Property owners have been receiving certified "intent to acquire" letters from HART. A number of properties will be acquired outright, while others will be reduced in area, which along with support structures and street improvements will have a drastic impact on parking and access. HART has picked up the pace of geotechnical drilling exploration for foundation engineering, and has indicated that rail construction may not be limited to sequential work along the route.
