KIA News

Since KIA members have already “marked their calendar” for the KIA General Membership Meeting set for Wednesday, August 25th from 11:30am, here’s a sneak preview of who will be making presentations:

Dr. Jerris R. Hedges, of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), has been their Dean since 2008.  He is recognized as a leader who has strengthened the medical school by building vital bridges between JABSOM’s community partners and collaborators.  Dr. Hedges is also known nationally as co-editor of Roberts and Hedges’ Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine, now in its sixth edition.

Dr. Joe W. Ramos recently assumed the role of Interim Director at the UH Cancer Center and has previously served the Cancer Center as Deputy Director, Associate Director of Administration, and Cancer Biology Program Leader among other roles since coming to Hawai‘i in 2004. He is fully committed to the Cancer Center’s mission to reduce the burden of cancer through research, education, patient care and community outreach with an emphasis on the unique ethnic, cultural and environmental characteristics of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. A core component of this work is to build and expand our partnerships with the community.

John T. Leong is the co-founder and CEO of Kupu Hawaii to cultivate positive environmental impact by focusing on developing Hawai‘i’s next generation of environmental stewards and community leaders.  He will share about Kupu's journey from his parents' garage to becoming Hawaiʻi's largest youth-focused conservation organization. With attention to its relevance to the Kakaʻako community, John will also discuss Kupu's development of the disrepaired net shed into the Hoʻokupu Center, a net-zero center of learning and service anchored at the Kewalo Basin. Lastly, he'll describe the path ahead for Kupu, as it seeks to increase its impact in the areas of service-learning and diversifying Hawaiʻi's economy.
