KIA General Membership Meeting

In a last-chance effort to support the KCAA Muriel Preschool KIA member Stanford Carr Development became a Silver sponsor; and as Sherry Goya, KIA Executive Director, was sitting with Emme Tomimbang Burns when the email was received, Emme, Inc. matched the Silver sponsorship!

It is hoped that other KIA members will step forward with sponsorships, teams, or donations of prizes or goodie bag items. Call Sherry at 808-722-8487 right away so she can sign you up or pick up any donated items.

This is a message from the KIA Invitational Golf Tournament’s beneficiary this year:

“Greetings from Muriel Preschool, located in the friendly and thriving neighborhood of Kakaako. We opened for business in 1898. In 1992, we relocated to the ground floor of the Kamakee Vista Building on Kawaiahao Street. Our school calendar is decked with fun-filled educational events. During the month of May, our school community will celebrate local traditions such as Boys’ Day, also known as “Kodomo no Hi” (Children’s Day in Japan); and Mother’s Day. Currently, our children and teachers are preparing for the annual Aloha Day Program. At this event, we honor and bid Aloha to our Kindergarten-bound students and families for their years of learning and growing with us. We are also excited about the upcoming KIA Invitational Golf Tournament which will help to finance our preschool’s playground. Mahalo to the wonderful KIA Board Members for their dedicated support!”

KIA Networking Event

The first KIA Networking Event for 2022 held on Wednesday, April 27th, from 11:30am, only had three participants - KIA’s Board President Nicole Nakano, KIA’s Executive Director Sherry Goya, and the School Administrator from KCAA Muriel Preschool. They all believe that the October KIA Networking Event will be well attended, as it will be held in the conference room of the Waterfront Plaza on Wednesday, October 26th.

Did you see?

Malama Kipuka Hawaii, a non profit group installed a pop up art piece at Mother Waldron Park at the corner of Pohukaina and Cooke St. The art piece is installed to honor Mother Waldron, one of the chief organizing forces in Kakaako from 1912 to 1934, a Pohukaina Elementary School fourth grade teacher, who resided near downtown Honolulu. Mother Waldron also served as after school playground director and, is generally credited with being the individual who had most influence in transforming the so-called 'Kakaako gangs' into law abiding groups and wiping out the unsavory reputation which at one time clung to the district. She had an uncanny knack for asking for help for others, acquiring equipment and materials for Kakaako youth, and encouraging youths into higher education. Her philosophy was simple, “Never help anybody who isn’t willing to help someone else. When I help anyone, I make him promise to pay for it. But they don’t pay me directly; they pay me by promising to do just as much or more for the next person in need.” On her 50th birthday, she was given a bar pin inscribed with the word “Mother.” The artwork features the word “Mother” and plays on the dual meaning of honoring Mother Waldron and the selflessness of Mothers this Mother’s Day season.
