KIA News

KIA member, the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), held their “Match Day” on March 19th, where 68 future physicians at JABSOM “match” into  post-medical school “MD Residency” training programs.  This  begins the culmination of a student’s medical school journey. The long journey includes meeting and respecting their first patient in the anatomy lab, spending late nights studying, and making personal sacrifices  -- e.g., missed birthdays and holiday gatherings. There are numerous moments of wonderment, pride and respect: delivering the first baby,  seeing patients in the hospital recover, and caring for patients throughout all phases of life and across numerous settings. Future physicians across the nation, including those at JABSOM found out where they will spend the next three to five years training as MD residents.  The KIA Executive Director’s niece received the announcement that she will stay in Hawaii at Pali Momi.

This year JABSOM is ranked at #24 in the Primary Care category out of the 122 ranked schools (selected from approximately 180 allopathic and osteopathic medical schools based in the US). This is the second time in 5 years that JABSOM made the top 25 (ranking #19 in the U.S. in Primary Care in 2016). Today, JABSOM is tied with Dartmouth College (NH), the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Vermont.  JABSOM is also ranked #31 in the percentage of graduates practicing in primary care fields.  In Research, JABSOM is ranked at #64 and tied with Rush University (IL).
